Basically, teeth straightening is aimed at improving dental health by correcting crooked teeth, underbites, overbites, deep bites, open bites, cross bites, teeth gaps, and other flaws of the teeth and jaw.

What are the options and treatments for teeth straightening?

To get your teeth straightened, you will need to see an orthodontist and get an orthodontic treatment. The two main types of orthodontic treatments are:

1 Teeth Straightening With Braces

Dental braces are devices used to align crooked teeth and fill the gap in between them. They are strategically placed to apply just the right pressure on teeth and move them into the correct position. Usually, braces need to be worn for 18 months to 2 years. However, the duration of the treatment depends on your goal and the type of braces you choose.

There are 4 main types of braces:

  • Metal Braces
  • Ceramic Braces
  • Damon Braces
  • Lingual Braces

Aligners are clear, custom-made mouthguard-like braces that slip over your teeth and bring them in the correct position with repeated wear. Unlike other braces, they are not visible on your teeth and can be removed when you’re having mealand slipped back on.Moreover, they are quicker than traditional metal braces.

There are two types of Aligners:

Retainers are a wire-based dental device that you need to wear overnight after completing an orthodontic treatment to ensure that the teeth remain in their new corrected positions. But can retainers straighten teeth without braces? Retainers can be used alone as a teeth straightening device, but it can only work in adults requiring minimum teeth correction. Remember, although using a retainer as an alternative to braces may sound appealing, this option is only viable in extremely limited cases.

Types of Teeth Misalignment

  • Overbite: When the upper front teeth significantly overlap the lower teeth, it creates a protruding look.
  • Underbite: The lower front teeth extend past the upper teeth, causing an incorrect alignment of the bite and jaw.
  • Crossbite: Instead of the upper teeth resting outside the lower teeth, they fit inside, resulting in chewing difficulties and jaw discomfort.
  • Open Bite: The upper and lower front teeth don’t meet when biting down, often causing speech problems and trouble biting into food.
  • Crowding: Not enough space within the dental arch for all the teeth, leading to overlapping or crooked teeth.
  • Spacing: Gaps between teeth due to excess room in the dental arch, affecting speech and confidence.
  • Midline Misalignment: The centerlines of the upper and lower teeth don’t match, causing an uneven appearance and bite problems.
  • Diastema: Gaps between teeth, usually in the front, impacting speech clarity and self-confidence.

Can Teeth Be Straightened at Any Age? What Is the Right Age for Teeth Straightening?

Whether you’re 16 or 60, you can go for teeth straightening at any age. Although the ideal age is between 10-14 years while the mouth is still growing. The only limitation on age is that young children must have all their permanent teeth before starting orthodontic treatment.

Teeth alignment methods are effective for people of all ages if the correct orthodontic treatment is done. The only prerequisite is that your gums shouldn’t be weak since braces put some extra pressure on the teeth as well gums.
